A Guide to Healing the Feminine Body, Mind and Spirit
Burke’s Bookstore hosted at least one author every month.
During the early nineties…. Queen Afua visited Burke’s Bookstore and spoke with a group of health enthusiasts about the value of Healing Thyself. At that time, her message resonated with people who had already embraced Natural ways of healing. Some of what she said registered with me too— But because I was involved with the Western model of health and healing, (As a Registered Nurse and health care educator) the concept of healing oneself sounded a bit off the wall. Nevertheless, after Queen Afua’s presentation, and the interest shown by the over 50 individuals who came out to hear her and to purchase her book, Heal Thyself, I started to pay closer attention to other or non – Western ways of healing.
Since Queen Afua’s book was published, and with the advent of the internet, healthy living and the prevention of illness have become a money-making platform and catch-all for many gurus. I want it known that many of the home remedies that Dr. Oz prizes and promotes on the TV, Queen Afua recommends in her book. Many of the health-related concepts that Andrew Weil espouses, Queen Afua explains in her book. From my perspective, Queen Afua is the leader of the pack.
As many of us know throughout the pages of the Bible, readers are reminded of the value of Forgiveness and Thanksgiving. In Heal Thyself, Queen Afua argues that Forgiveness and Thanksgiving are the Keys to Spiritual Preparation for Healing and maintaining health.
When this book was first published, the ideas, suggestions, and recommendations were frowned upon by many people who valued the Western-model of health and healing over African-Inspired approaches to health and healing… Fast forward to 2020— I can now see Queen Afua as a visionary who studied and immersed herself in approaches to Health and Well being that was less expensive and more user friendly than Western ways of looking at and treating health-related challenges.
For those of you who have not read this book-It is a must-read if you are seeking to be healthy, balanced, and whole.
